Why waste allowance is the whole calculation

Floor area is trivial to work out. The number that actually determines how many packs you buy is the waste allowance, and it varies more than most guides admit.

A plain rectangular room with boards running parallel to the long wall wastes very little — the offcut from the end of one row usually starts the next. That is the 5% case. A room with a bay, an alcove, a chimney breast or a doorway threshold generates offcuts too short to reuse, and 10% is the realistic floor. Diagonal or herringbone layouts waste dramatically more, because every board meets a wall at an angle and both ends are cut.

Buy it all at once

Flooring is manufactured in batches and colour varies between them, particularly in engineered wood and anything with a printed decor layer. Two packs of nominally the same product bought three weeks apart can be visibly different laid side by side.

So the pack count the calculator gives you is a single purchase, not a starting point. If it says eleven packs, buy eleven packs on the same day from the same store. Ordering two more later is the most common way a floor ends up with a patch that catches the light differently.

Keep the spare. A damaged board in year three is a twenty-minute repair with a matching offcut and a much larger job without one.

What the calculator does not include

Underlay is a separate purchase and usually comes in rolls sized differently from the flooring packs — work it out from the plain room area with no waste allowance, since underlay butts rather than overlaps.

Beading, threshold strips and expansion spacers are all length-based rather than area-based. Measure the perimeter for beading and count the doorways for thresholds.

Most floating floors need an expansion gap of 8–12 mm around the entire perimeter. That gap does not reduce the number of packs you need — the boards still have to span the room — but forgetting it causes the floor to buckle in summer, which is a far more expensive mistake than a miscount.

Common questions

How much extra flooring should I order?

10% is the sensible default for a normal room. Drop to 5% only for a plain rectangle with a straight lay, and go to 15–20% for diagonal or herringbone.

Can I order more later if I run short?

You can, but batch colour varies and a later pack may not match. Buy the full quantity in one purchase.

Does the waste figure include the expansion gap?

No. The expansion gap sits at the perimeter and does not change how many boards span the room.
