Pattern repeat is why area maths fails
A roll of wallpaper is not a quantity of area you can spend freely. It is a length that gets cut into drops, and each drop has to start at the right point in the pattern.
If the paper has a 52 cm repeat and your wall is 2.4 m high, each drop cannot be 2.4 m — it has to be 2.6 m, five full repeats, so that the pattern lines up with its neighbour. That 20 cm is waste on every single drop, and across a room it is most of a roll.
This is why two papers with identical roll dimensions can need different numbers of rolls for the same room. Area-based calculators cannot see that difference, which is why they under-order.

Order it all at once, in one batch
Wallpaper is printed in batches and the batch number is printed on the label. Colour varies between batches enough to be visible on a wall, particularly on flat pastel grounds.
Order every roll at the same time and check that the batch numbers match when they arrive. A roll ordered three weeks later to finish a wall is the classic way to end up with a visible seam that nothing can fix short of stripping the wall.
Buy one roll more than the calculation. Papering is unforgiving of mistakes — a misaligned drop usually cannot be rescued, and having a spare is the difference between a twenty-minute setback and a fortnight waiting for stock.
What the calculator assumes
It works on perimeter and does not deduct doors and windows. That is deliberate. Wallpaper is hung in full drops and the offcut above a door is rarely usable elsewhere, so deducting openings from the area consistently under-orders. Professional practice is to count drops around the full perimeter and treat the openings as waste.
If you have a genuinely large opening — patio doors across most of a wall — count the drops manually for that wall and add them to the total by hand.
Common questions
How many rolls of wallpaper for a room?
Divide the perimeter by the roll width to get the number of drops, then divide the roll length by the drop length (rounded up to the pattern repeat) to get drops per roll. The calculator does both.
Why do I need more rolls for a large pattern repeat?
Each drop has to be cut to a whole number of repeats so the pattern lines up, so a large repeat wastes more on every drop.
Should I deduct doors and windows?
Generally no. Paper is hung in full drops and the offcuts around openings are rarely reusable.
